I’ve done that a couple times. Ether works best, but gasoline will work as well. Neither are particularly good for the rubber, but it beats the heck out of being stranded. People used to do this a lot with tractor/trailer tires, but it was outlawed due to the number of injuries caused by it. When using the technique, don’t forget to remove the valve core from the stem, or at the very least don’t stand in front of it. For some reason, the valve core acts a lot like a bullet when it leaves the stem at a high rate of speed……and it’s a royal pain to keep air in a tire with no valve core.
