Uh, Ma’am, your son doesn’t appear to have intended to “buy” anything. When you assault the seller prior to the purchase, it generally increases the price. :)
I’ve never heard it called the “Provocative Act” doctrine, but this is a well known principle of common law known as Felony Murder or Felony Homicide. It typically goes like this: Two guys try to rob a bank, the guard shoots one, the other gets charged with Felony Homicide. It’s not new, and I suspect that if it’s “rarely used” it’s because this situation doesn’t happen all that often. It is probably “used” just about every time it happens.
