S.2590, Again

Senator Ted Stevens, who steadfastly supported the “Bridge to Nowhere” in Alaska that would have connected the town of Ketchikan (population 8,900) with its airport on the Island of Gravina (population 50) at a cost to federal taxpayers of $320 million and even threatened to resign his seat if funding was withdrawn, now admits to placing the hold on S.2590 and claims that he did so because he was worried about the proposal’s price tag. Costs for the S.2590 proposal have been estimated by the Congressional Budget Office to be “$4 million in 2007 and about $15 million [total] over the 2007-2011 period.”, for a tool available to all U.S. citizens, including the 8,950 residents of Ketchikan and Gravina.

I may have been mistaken when I said that anyone would be a better representative to our national legislature than Cynthia McKinney. Cynthia was surely an embarrassment, but she was only that. She has sponsored only one bill which has been enacted, has a mediocre attendance record on votes, and has been generally ineffective.

Ted Stevens is an embarrassment who is also actively harming our nation in direct opposition to public desire. And he seems to believe he can get away with it.

Update II by Sammy: By the way, Scott and I would be happy to provide the database and all necessary infrastructure and personnel to operate it through 2011 for a mere $12 million, saving the taxpayers a few million bucks compared to the Congressional Budget Office’s estimate. We’re just generous like that.

Update III: So Senator Byrd had a hold on S.2590 as well. His excuse was that he “wanted time to read the legislation, understand its implications, and see whether the proposal could be improved.” Why am I skeptical?
