Bacterial Photography

bacteria4.jpgStudents at The University of Texas at Austin have created genetically modified E. coli bacterium which produce pigment when exposed to light. Using a culture of these bacterium as a form of film, they have produced exceptionally high resolution images, as each cell is a pixel. The image at left shows the result of a blown up image of E. coli being projected onto one of the cultures. A more thourough description of their work is found at the link.
